Diet pills with ephedra group alkaloids... How will you know whether a product has ephedrine? We’ll show you how in this article.
Most ephedra diet pills have this on their supplement labels: Ephedra extract (25 mg).
But, this ingredient doesn’t tell if it has ephedrine or not. Most often it doesn’t have ephedrine at all. The ephedra extract is possibly from a species that don’t have actual ephedrine. This is because ephedra is a botanical name for approximately 40 species of plants and these plants produce alkaloids. Most of these have very low amounts of alkaloids and minimal to no ephedrine at all.
How to Know If A Product Contains Ephedrine
Medical studies usually used 72 mg or more of ephedra alkaloids (which contains as much as 65 mg of ephedrine) for weight loss. But, it’s unlikely to get a very high dosage in the U.S. Thus, weight loss supplements offer extra ingredient for boosting metabolism such as caffeine.
Products containing ephedra have been quite successful in helping people lose weight. Some of these diet pills are with ephedra group alkaloids and some do not. Though it’s not the best solution for everyone, what you can do is to just experiment to identify what works for you - with your doctor’s go signal of course.

How to Know If A Product Contains Ephedrine
- Check the amount of alkaloid recorded in milligrams.
- See the correct species name on the supplement label – It should say Ephedra sinica (a Chinese medicinal herb also known as Ma Huang). Just the word ephedra isn’t enough. You might see Pakastani ephedra (Ephedra gerardiana) which also has ephedrine. Whereas Ephedra nevadensis (an American species) has no ephedrine at all.
- The best products will evidently state the amount of ephedrine. If not, then you may gauge the natural concentration. Ephedrine can be as much as 90% of the total alkaloids.
